Defined:

Thwarted means prevented from achieving a goal or having plans obstructed.

Tenterhooks refers to a state of anxious anticipation or suspense.

Subdued means quiet, restrained, or softened in intensity.

Ashen: Pale or gray in color – Typically referring to someone's complexion when they are very sick, shocked, or frightened.
